Important Rules Determining Orbital Occupancy (1) The Aufbau Principle Atomic orbitals are filled with electrons in order of increasing energy: 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p etc. (2) The Pauli Exclusion Principle Wolfgang Pauli, Jr. (Institute for Theoretical Physics, Hamburg) stated that a maximum of two electrons may be placed in each orbital, and their spins must be paired. The electron has the property of spin and only two orientations are allowed. These are shown by arrows: or . Spin paired electrons are indicated by . (3) Hund's Rule The German physicist F.H. Hund proposed that degenerate (energy equivalent) atomic orbitals are filled singly first with parallel spins before they are doubly occupied. In this way, electron-electron repulsion is minimized.
