Molecular Orbitals The p z atomic orbitals of carbon combine in-phase and out-of-phase to form bonding and antibonding molecular orbitals. C C + two isolated p z -atomic orbitals combine out of phase in phase C C antibonding ! * MO C C bonding ! MO two nodes one node The in-phase combination leads to overlap between the lobes of similar mathematical sign above and below the nodal plane. This is the bonding MO . The out-of-phase combination results in a second node between the p-orbitals. This is the anti-bonding MO .
