Ethers Ethers have the general structures R-O-R and R-O-R' , where R and R' are different alkyl (or aryl) groups. These structures may be compared with the structures of the water molecule and alcohols. O H H : 105 o water an alcohol O R' R 110 o O H R 109 o an ether (when R = R' = CH 3 ) (when R = CH 3 CH 2 ) The bond angle tends to increase as alkyl groups replace H.
