Planning Organic Syntheses Synthesis in organic chemistry is the preparation of a target molecule by one or more reactions. Very complex organic structures can be prepared by currently available synthetic methods. The synthetic reactions covered in this course are standard methods that should lead to the desired product in the absence of complicating side reactions. As more and more procedures are covered, it will become possible to design synthetic sequences that allow larger organic structures to be built from simpler ones. Retrosynthetic Analysis: Designing a Synthesis In designing a multi-step synthesis of a target compound, it is usually helpful to work backwards. This approach is called retrosynthetic analysis .
