Oxidative Cleavage Reactions of Alkynes Alkynes undergo oxidation reactions similar to alkenes. Oxidation by Potassium Permanganate Mild conditions produce 1,2-diones: CH 3 CH 2 C CCH 3 2-pentyne KMnO 4 H 2 O, 25 o C CH 3 CH 2 C-CCH 3 O = O 2,3-pentanedione (90%) Vigorous conditions result in oxidative-cleavage: CH 3 CH 2 C CCH 3 KMnO 4 , HO - H 2 O, heat CH 3 CH 2 CO 2 - + CH 3 CO 2 - carboxylate salts H + CH 3 CH 2 CO 2 H + CH 3 CO 2 H propanoic acid acetic acid
