Atomic Structure of Materials Dr. Javed Bari 2 2.1 Basic Materials Concept At resting state (equilibrium) materials have a specific atomic and molecular spacing dictated by the size and arrangement of atoms The spacing increases or decreases with changes in energy which is usually caused by temperature or mechanical changes The arrangement of the atoms in solids is dictated by the bonding mechanisms and molecular structure These, in turn, strongly influence the strength and mechanical response of materials

Atomic Structure of Materials Dr. Javed Bari 3 2.1.1 Electron Configuration 2.1.2 Bonding: 1. Primary Bonds : form when atoms interchange or share electrons in order to fill the outer (valence) shells like noble gases. a) Ionic Bond: transfers electrons from one atom to another to eliminate electrical unbalances b) Covalent Bond: between a few similar atoms that share electrons to fill the outer shells c) Metallic Bond: large scale sharing of electrons between many neighboring atoms. 2. Secondary Bonds : form from imbalance electric charge in among atomic arrangements.
