Materials Engineering Concepts Dr. Javed Bari 2 INTRODUCTION Civil Engineers must be familiar with common engineering materials: h steel, mineral aggregates (gravel or crushed stone), concrete, masonry, asphalt etc. Many advances in new materials: h polymers, adhesives, composites etc. How do we choose which material to use for a specific purpose? h economic factors, mechanical properties, non-mechanical (physical) properties, production/construction considerations (scheduling), and aesthetic properties (visual - architect)
