Greg Sullivan November 21, 2008 Research Methods Professor Millwood Critical Review of Journal Article In the journal article titled, Sleep problems reported by patients entering opioid agonist treatment , an experiment was performed on a sample of (n=113) newly admitted patients to opioid agonist treatment. In this quasi-experimental design a one way between subjects design used four different dependent variables to test inadequate durations of sleep, poor quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness in participants whom had recently entered opioid agonist treatment. The journal hypothesized that, “those aspects of sleep dysfunction would correlate with psychiatric severity and promote the reported use of licit and illicit substances to induce sleep.” (Burke et al. 2007 p. 329) The experiment was performed by the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2007. This current study consisted of 113 participants (80% female) with a mean age of 36.2 years, and an average of 9.2 years of regular heroin use prior to baseline assessment. The four self report questionnaires that were used to test inadequate durations of sleep, poor quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness were; The Addiction Severity Index (ASI), The Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Questionnaire (MOS), The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and The Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ). The ASI is a self report on drug use for the past 30 days that gathers information on how reported drug use affects various aspects of ones life. The questionnaire has well established internal validity and was administered by staff that had completed proper training. The MOS is a 12 item self report of sleep functioning of past 30 days with 10 of the 12 items answered
