The Immune Response Lecture Notes Rewrite and Notes on Reading by Larry Antigen versus Pathogen : Pathogen is an infectious agent, but antigen is any foreign substance. 1 A molecule. We categorize antigens by whether are found and function primarily inside or outside the cell. 1. inside: all viruses, the minority of bacteria and certain protozoan parasites 2. outside the cell: most bacteria and other cellular pathogens. 2 types of Immune Response: Innate response and Acquired (aka Adaptive) response 1. Both require body mechanisms to distinguish foreign, to discriminate between self and nonself. But only acquired develop memory 2. Response lag time in acquired immune response; not in innate immune response; acquired response to first invasion takes days; response to second invasion takes hours; memory cells in B cell line, humoral, only are involved in memory process that quickens the humoral response to second infection. The Players: Summary of Cell Types 1. Lymphocytes Are nucleated leukocytes (white blood cells) that circulate between blood and lymphoid organs a. NK, Natural Killer cells – Nonspecific lymphocyte involved in the Innate Immune Response. Cause the death of infected cells. i. Attack body cells that are infected ii. Induce apoptosis iii. (by an intracellular pathogen, usually a virus); iv. this can include cancer cells; may be able to kill them before they form a tumor b. B cell or B lymphocyte) Acquired Humoral Immunity c. Th cell -- T helper cell. mediates active in both acquired immunity responses d. Tc cell or Tc lymphocyte -- also “CTL” for Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes Active in Acquired Cell Mediated Immunity; recognize infected cells and kill them. e. T suppressor cells (suppress the immune response) f. There are many other types of T cells. g. For all these types of cells there are Memory cells. (the book did not make this clear) Innate Immune Response Supposedly not covered by Bruck, but he refers to parts of it and processes in it, so… know it a little. Innate Immune response is: First line of defense. Nonspecific. Same response regardless of antigen and pathogen. No lag time. Summary of Mechanisms: 1. Inflammation (local redness, swelling and … a. Fever) b. Chemoattractants c. Phagocytes (neutrophils and macrophages) 1 So an antigen can be a molecule in or on a pollen particle, even though neither the pollen nor the antigen are harmful. In fact the immune reponse (allergic reaction) can be a problem while the pollen in and of itself is not. 1
