Class time will be devoted to exploring New Jersey politics at the state and local levels, discussing events with guest speakers, and exploring current issues and controversies confronting the people and politicians in New Jersey. We will meet approximately every other week, with the dates of meetings detailed below. You will also have to participate in the internship program, where you will be working in a legislator’s office, attending legislative sessions and committee hearings, and examining issues that are of interest to you and your legislator. The primary focus on this course is the internship experience. During the internship, you will spend 96-120 hours working, or 8-10 hours per week, on matters of interest to you and your supervisor. Class time will focus on exploring the political process through the lens of issues of current importance, interacting with guest speakers who will share their political experiences, and learning the basic of New Jersey’s political institutions.
