Elbridge Gerry, the governor of Massachusetts redrew voting districts in Essex County. 3. One new district was seen to resemble a salamander. 4. A man who was for all intents and purposes a critic of Governor Gerry’s administration cried out, “Gerrymander!” 5. Changes may be made in the character of a district’s voting pattern by a political group by gerrymandering, excluding of rival groups’ supporters. EXERCISE 39.2 1. Some Vietnam veterans coming back to the United States had problems readjusting again to life in America. 2. Afflicted with post-traumatic stress disorder, some veterans had psychological problems that caused them to have trouble holding jobs and maintaining relationships. 3. Some who used to use drugs in Vietnam could not break their drug habit.

As a result of such stereotyping, veterans are included in the same antidiscrimination laws that protect other victims of discrimination. EXERCISE 26.2 1. Some people are champion procrastinators. These people seldom complete their work on time. 2. If you procrastinate and delay completing an assignment you may fear criticism or rejection. 3. Procrastinators often desire to please a boss or a teacher. Because of their fear of failure they cannot do the work. 4. Although procrastination seems like a hopeless habit, it is conquerable. 5. Helpfully encouraging teachers or employers can give procrastinators the confidence to do good work on time....
