Meausreemnt of the Kinetics of the Decompositon of H 2 O 2 Purpose: To determine the rate and order of a chemical reaction> Discussion Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen over a period of time. 2 H 2 O 2 (l) ------> 2 H 2 O (l) + O 2 (g) This process can be enhanced by the addition of manganese dioxide, MnO 2 , which serves as a catalyst for the reaction. The rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide depends on initial concentration of the hydrogen peroxide, the temperature and the amount of catalyst used. To monitor the rate of the reaction you may monitor the time required for the loss of a unit of mass due to the production of oxygen . A convenient mass of 0.01 or 0.02 gram may be used. The moles of oxygen evolved per 0.01 gram of mass loss is given by the expression: Moles of Oxygen gas = 0.01 gram / 32.00 grams per mole of oxygen = . 0003125 mole In the balanced equation the ratio of moles of H 2 O 2 to moles of O 2 is 2 to 1,
