Neonatal Nursing The beginning of an infants life are constantly changing and challenging. Neonatal nurses care for the new born babies for the first twenty eight days of their life. Not very many nurses will care for babies two years of age or older. Many nurses start out as staff nurses caring for ill newborns. Neonatal nurses attend to deliveries, weigh and measure infants, bathe and monitor their health while in the hospital. Nurses provide care based on how far along the baby is such as, method of delivery and overall health. The challenges newborns are facing today could be HIV infection, addiction, premature birth, etc. Neonatal nurses take care of the newborns for as long as it is required. They give medications, vaccines, and diagnostics tests. Operating medical equipment is also necessary for nurses such as, ventilators, incubators and phototherapy lamps. When infants are about to begin a treatment they should also be working to help the patient's family as well. Diligence and speed are parts of characteristics in becoming neonatal nurse practitioner because their response can depend on the life of a neonate. Nurses are to update patient medical records, support and educate the parents about their little loved ones requirements at home and also teach new moms to breastfeed. Nurses have many opportunities to work with parents and families when they are learning to take care of their infants When mothers would stay at the hospital for a week or more, neonatal nurses would work in the nurseries while the mothers recovered. These days mothers stay in the hospital for just a couple days. There are three
