Lecture 19 Cerebral cortex- undergone the reatest deelopment during phylogeny, reaching enormous sizes in primates Cortex Divided into 4 lobes: Frontal Lobe (rostral-dorsal) , Parietal Lobe (mid-dorsal) , Occipital Lobe (caudal) , Temporal Lobe (ventral) (Cerebellum: ventral-caudal) Association Cortex: most of cerebral cortex; advanced stages of sensory info processing, multisensory integration, and sensorimotor integration; higher thinking Nissl: stain, RNA associated with rough ER and nucleolus, present only in the cell body, not in the dendrites. Selective for the nucleic acids and stain the cell body (but not the axon/dendrites) of every cell body in brain. Golgi: stain, stains only a few neurons but in their entirety—says that axons are fused w/ other axons, web Cajal: neurons interact by way of contact or contiguity rather than continuity- individual units, also said that input was on dendrite and cell body end, output transmitted by axon Layers: Weigart: shows that cortex does not have a uniform appearance, but rather has layers of
