Reagan Bleasdell Modern Philosophy Weekly Writing #10 The House and the Ship Kant uses the example of a house and a ship to show that our perceptions cannot determine the order or objective relations of one appearance preceding or succeeding another. In Kant’s house example, he shows that, while the viewer perceives the house in a specific order, the house does not have an order in itself. The viewer can observe the house from top to bottom or right to left or any permutation of these orders and is still the same house. In the example of the ship, however, the ship starts lower in the river and ends higher up the river as perceived by the viewer. In this case, the viewer can only perceive or apprehend the movement of the ship in this order. Kant then concludes, “Hence the order in the perceptions’ succession in apprehension is here determinate, and apprehension is tied to this order,” while, “In the
