2 Simulating a Digital Logic Circuit using Xilinx WebPACK Software This manual contains step-by-step instructions to use Xilinx’s ISE WebPACK software to design and simulate a digital logic circuit. This software is available in the Digital Electronics Lab and you can use it to test / simulate your D1 project or use it for VHDL programming. The simulation procedure involves three major steps: 1. Creating a new schematic project using WebPACK Project Navigator , 2. Drawing the schematic diagram using WebPACK Engineering Capture System (ECS) , 3. Simulating the design using HDL Bencher and ModelSim software. The circuit to be simulated is illustrated in Fig. B1. It represents a multiplexer-based circuit to connect one of four 3-bit words A, B or C to another device whose inputs are marked X. Important: Before the lab session try to understand the operation of the circuit. This understanding will be much useful during the simulation of the circuit. A printout of the completed circuit, made from the Xilinx software is available at the end of this manual. NOTE : Remember to bring a 1.44 MB floppy diskette with you when you attend the lab classes. Use this diskette to save your work. Anything saved on the hard disk drive of the computers in the lab will be automatically cleared at the end of the day.

4 To launch the ISE software package: 1. Double-click the ISE Project Navigator icon on your desktop or select Start Programs Xilinx ISE Project Navigator . 2. Select File New Project f rom Project Navigator , Project manager will open the New Project dialog box. 3. Specify a name for your project in the Project Name edit box. Specify a valid directory name for your project in the Directory edit box. Specify the default setting for the Value of Property Name as shown in Fig. B2 and click OK : Fig. B2: New Project Dialog Box. The Project Navigator main window is shown in the Fig. B3. 5 The Project Navigator window is the central place from where all aspects of the design/simulation process are controlled.
