Piscope 1Dominick PiscopeGlobal IssuesDisposable People16 December 2019Disposable PeopleWhat is slavery? Does slavery still exist in todays world? Wether its domestic abuse, child labor, or even agriculture labor in general and so on we tend to over look these things.Slavery can be defined as someone who is restricted of there rights and forced to work forsomeone else. Throughout history we learn about slavery and how it used to be a problem, butwe tend to forget how slavery is still a common theme in todays world. The reason why we tendto forget is mainly because its not common in America however it is still common in almostevery other country in the world. Slavery can be seen in many areas such as Pakistan, Brazil, andThailand, andDisposable people the book talks about how people today are still living life as slaves. Ittalks about how these people are mistreated and how big slavery still is. You would think thatnowadays the world isn't that cruel anymore and we all live this happy life, however that's nottrue. Instead its the complete opposite people who don't have the privilege to live in Americaoften suffer from slavery and live in harsh enviorments as a result. Instead of trying to improve acountry these rulers and lawmakers of these countries or places tend to want to force the peopleto work at young ages and not give them a childhood or just work people for there pleasure. Yousee people who work in these conditions most of the timedont have a choice and it's not likethey get paid good as a result.
Piscope 2My first country i'm going to be talking about from the book Disposable PeopleisThailand. In thailand they have many ways in which they incorprate slavery. Due to being poormost women are sold asproperty and become sex slaves. In the book Siri a thailand child wassold into slavery her gentials were soar due to 15 men having ex with her. May I remind you thisyoung girl is 15, so we can see that thailand is ruthless. “Because she looks so young she can besold as a “new” girl at a higher price of about 15$, which is more than twice that charged forother girls” (Bale 1999). This goes to show you that the humanity in thailand is not good andinhumane. Also this shows you that they prefer sex slavery and almost seem to endorse it. Thesewomen fear aids and getting pregnant so in most cases they will try to insist on the people towear condoms. They take injections of the contraceptive drug Depo-Provera. If you try to runaway from being hurt by a client you will get beaten and raped. These clients will pay for sexand abuse and take the will out of these women taking there rights away and rapeing them. InThailand prostitution is illegal yet there are girls like Siri that are sold into sex slavery by thethousands. Money culture and society blend in new and powerful ways to enslave girls like Siri.
