10/13/2008 In-Class Writing #3 Would you choose to live like Caesar or Cicero if you lived back then? The middle of the first century BCE was a time of great turmoil in the Roman Republic. The old, traditional idea of shared governance among the Senate, the magistrates and the people was on the verge of collapse as individuals like Caesar strove for absolute power. Greed and corruption plagued the Republic, and a few statesmen tried to stop the abuse of self-serving ambition. Cicero was one of the last of these citizens dedicated to the preservation of the values of the Republic. Of course, even those who hewed to conservative principles were themselves sometimes the victims of their own ambitions and Cicero was no exception. It is easy to see how each lifestyle has it pros and cons. Caesar did what was expected, and honored. He fought his way to the top, so that he could have the things he wanted. Cicero, on the other hand, did what his heart told him, and tried to make sure that thing remained honest and true so that the government would last and do good. It is
