11/10/2008 In-Class Writing #7 Examine major literary monuments of the 18 th century. European literature of the 18th century refers to literature (poetry, drama and novels) produced in Europe during this period. The 18th century saw the development of the modern novel as literary genre, in fact many candidates for the first novel in English date from this period, of which Eliza Haywood's 1724 Fantomina is probably the best known. The Enlightenment is usually dated from 1687 through 1789. It came about after Europe had three he realizations. They call them the “three humiliations”: the earth was not at the center of the univers; people were creatures of nature like other animals; and their reason was subject to passions and instincts. This enable people do new things like discover truths through science, and explore the full realm of being human. The 17 th century can be broken down into 3 literary eras; the Restoration (1660- 1700), dominated by Dryden; the Age of Satire (1700-1745), dominated by Swift and
