Christie Strawser Date Submittal: 6/17/08 Headline News 8 Date Due: 6/10/08 Puppy Cloning The article I read was about a California based biotech company called BioArts that will be cloning dogs for the five highest bidders in a series of online auctions. “The cloning process is to be performed by a South Korean scientist, Hwang Woo-suk, who suffered international disgrace after being found to have faked research.” Apparently he was involved in a research project involving human cloning and embryonic stem cells and actually faked much of his research. BioArts had teamed up with this South Korean research team that recently created three clones of Hawthorne’s family dog, Missy, who died in 2002. Chief Executive, Lou Hawthorne realized the market for cloned dogs may be stronger than the one for cats that failed in 2002 when few were willing to pay $50,000, because his old company offered the storage of pet dna for possible future clones. He says that the average dog owner has a different relationship with their dog than a cat
