Christie Strawser Date Submittal: 5/6/08 Headline News 4 Date Due: 5/6/08 Colossal Squid In the Ross Sea of Antarctica a group of fisherman accidentally caught the largest colossal squid ever documented. They were fishing for Patagonian toothfish, sold by the name of Chilean sea bass. When the creature became entangled in the net while feeding on one of the hooked toothfish. Even though it took two hours, the crew managed to get the rare find on board and stored it in a huge freezer below the deck. Just this week, scientists in New Zealand were thawing the corpse so that they can learn more about this mysterious creature. No one has ever seen a full grown colossal squid in its natural deep ocean habitat. They hope their examination will help them see how the creature lives. “The thawing and examination are being broadcast live on the internet. They will study its anatomical features, remove the stomach, beak, and other mouth parts, take tissue samples for DNA analysis and determine its sex (Live Science).” They are hoping for a boy because it will be the first documented description of the male
