Death rate is the number of people who die per 1000 individuals per per year. The population growth rate is greatly influenced by the sex ratio of the population (137-138). - Natality is the number of individuals added to the population through reproduction. Mortality is the number of deaths per year. Sex ratio is the comparison between the number of males and females in population. Age distribution is the comparative percentages of different age groups within a population. Biotic potential is the inherent reproductive capacity. Spacial distribution has to do with population density and availability of resources. - Biotic potential is important to population growth because it directly impacts its biological ability to produce offspring. - First portion of the curve is known as the lag phase, the population grows very slowly because there are few births. Exponential growth phase is when more organisms are producing offspring and population begins to grow at an accelerated pace. Deceleration is when the population growth rate will begin to slow as the death rate and the birthrate come to equal one another. - Carrying capacity is the maximum sustainable population for an area. The carrying capacity is determined by a set of limiting factors. Successional changes, climate variations, disease epidemics, forest fires, or floods can change the carrying capacity of an area for a specific species.
