Worrell 1 Emily Worrell LIT2081 MW 5:15-6:30 “Existence precedes essence” is one of the defining characteristics of Albert Camus’ design of existentialism. Fundamentally, existentialism is the process by which one characterizes themselves through their actions. Camus stressed the five basic principles, which essentially compose this philosophy: all of mankind has self-governed freewill; life is a series of choices that in effect cause stress; there are few choices that do not include negative consequences; some of these consequences are absurd or unexplainable; and all of the choices that you make, you will inevitably follow through with. This idea can unquestionably be traced through several literary texts, as well as through Hollywood cinema. However, Camus’ designs of how we identify ourselves are more notably illustrated in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot , and Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore and In Bruges . Samuel Beckett’s tragicomedy, Waiting for Godot , envelopes a majority of the principles outlined by Camus and existentialism based within the main characters of Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo). Didi and Gogo are the only existence of any form of a plot, in the mere fact that the entire play is about the duo waiting for someone to meet them. The readers are never informed of why they are waiting for the unknown character of Godot, but can only analyze that the protagonists have made the decision to linger at the tree where they were instructed to and not move until their visitor has finally arrived (Beckett 8). Such an action can certainly be passed
