Most people in the United States have some type of belief in the supernatural, which accounts for the popularity of Halloween and ghost stories in the United States. Today there has even been research that shows that ghosts and apparitions are due to certain neurological processes in the brain. In fantasy literature, ghosts are common characters used to give wisdom, allude to flashbacks, and terrify readers. The popularity of ghost stories and Halloween has caused the American population to have a strong belief in apparitions, in fact, according to Newsweek, “A Gallup poll found that only 7 percent of Americans do not believe in telepathy, déjà vu, ghosts, past lives, or other supernatural phenomena, which may have more than a little to do with the
