Too Young For the NBA In 1974 the Philadelphia 76ers drafted an 18 year old named Darryl Dawkins right out of high school; something that had never been done before and something that, at the time, was very controversial. Nearly 30 years later we began seeing kids drafted into the NBA right out of high school left and right. With this come questions of the kid's maturity and development. The NBA passed a rule in 2006 stating that all high school players had to go to college for at least one year before they can declare themselves eligible for the NBA draft. This rule seems to be a quick fix to the controversy surrounding the kids entering the NBA right out of high school, but there are a couple problems that come along with it. Although the new rule has some slight problems with it, I believe that it is a good rule, and that it should actually be increased to at least 2 years in college before the teens can enter the NBA draft. The success rate of these athletes who skip college and go right to the pros is not very high. Since Dawkins, 40 players have been drafted right out of high school into the NBA. A majority of these players have come in the last 10 years, because between 1976 and 1995 no players were drafted out of high school. But in the past 10 years this has become an ongoing trend and players who think they are good enough to go right to the NBA sometimes get a cold dose of reality. Of these 40 players that skipped high school, only 10 of them have had what experts call a "successful career". According the NBA.com ,in 2003, six players were drafted out of high school, and of these six players only one has gone on to have a successful career. The only player who is successful from this draft is LeBron James. A few of the other players have hardly been heard of such as, Travis Outlaw, Ndudi Ebi, Kendrick
