Lecture 11- Sedimentary Structures I. Bedding a. Sediments are deposited in layers called strata or beds b. A series of beds is known as bedding c. Oldest layer is on the bottom d. Originally horizontal because the sediments from which  the sedimentary rocks formed were originally deposited in  horizontal layers e. Distinguish by differences in  i. Particle size ii. Composition iii. Particle sorting iv. Color f. Each bed is separated by a bedding plane i. Its caused by the grain size or composition of the  particles being deposited or a pause during  deposition g. Stoke’s law i. Radius squared ii. Density contrast between particle and water iii. The bigger and more dense the particle the faster it  will drop through water iv. **the ability of water current to carry any particle of  suspension is controlled by 1. size and density of individual particles 2. velocity of the water current 3. as the water current slows progressively  smaller and smaller water particles will be  deposited II. Graded Bedding a. Particle sizes vary

b. Course grains at the bottom c. Finer grains at the top d. Gravel then sand and silt then clay at the top e. Built up as sediment is deposited from a gradually slowing  current III. Turbidity Currents a. Dense masses of sediment laden water that flow  downslope on the sea floor.  b. The sediment water mix is denser than clear water so it is  pulled down the slope by gravity until it rests on the sea
