Exam 1 Essay 1 Social Construction Theory- suggests that we understand to be "real" as a result of human interaction and this leads to people adopting beliefs, categories, practices, and institutions. Creation - It is through human interaction that lead people to form "groups" Maintenance -It is through constant human interactions that these "groups" are maintained -presence of ideology Transformation -Human interaction between groups that creates new ideas Key Terms -socialization: The process of social interaction in which one learns the ways of the society in one's specific roles-the set of rules and expectations attached to a social position or status in that society. (Ore) -stereotypes: rigid, oversimplified, often exaggerated, beliefs that are applied both to an entire category of people and to each individual in it. (Ore) -critical thinking: identifies assumptions, recognizes standpoints, seeks alternative ways of thinking, and encourages skeptical, reflective analysis. (Ore) -naming: nothing exists without a name. Naming a person sums of the entire person him/herself, usually degrading. (Johnson) -empathy: the ability to identify what the thoughts and experiences of another even though you have not shared them. -matrix of domination: refers to how systems of inequality interact and are not
