1/16/09 2 nd week Homunculus Sematosensory cortex (Parietal Lobe) Motor cortex (Frontal Lobe) Measuring Brain Activity EEGs and MEG s) record electrical and magnetic activity. Positron emission tomography (PET) uses radioactivity from chemicals injected into the bloodstream. A machine picks up areas in the brains where the radioactivity go to. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) uses magnetic detectors to measure amount of oxygen in areas of the brain. Other structures in the brain The hypothalamus (2)= eating, thirst, sleep, temperature, hormonal levels, and motivated behavior The amygdale (2)= crucial for emotional processing The hippocampus (2)= critical for memory, sensitive to high fever, alcohol Spinal cord Both reflex and voluntary responses are conducted through the spinal cord A reflex is a rapid, automatic response originating in the spinal cord A voluntary response originates in the brain and travels through the spinal to the muscles
