Correlation between performance on one activity and performance on another activity iii. General intelligence “g” – single underlying ability i. mental speed ii. visual processing speed iii. working memory capacity iv. Specific intelligence “s” – musical, logical, mechanical, arithmetical, and spatial abilities c. Fluid vs. Crystallized intelligences i. guture research worked to explain types of “s” specific intelligences ii. fluid vs. crystallized intelligence (Catell) iii. fluid- reasoning and using information, ability to learn new information, recognize relationships and solve unfamiliar problems (peak before age 20, remains steady and then declines in old age) iv. crystallized-already acquired skills and knowledge, ability to apply this knowledge (continues to increase across life span) d. Multiple intelligences (Gardner) i. Unrelated intelligences ii. Can be skilled in one area but not another iii. Intelligences: language, musical, logical and mathematical reasoning, spatial reasoning, ability to recognize and classify objects, kinesthetic skills, self control and self understanding, sensitivity to others’ social signals iv.
