RUNNINGHEADER: Ethical Standards
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) standards of ethical
coding are more standards associated with coding. If a credentialed professional is found in
violation with AHIMA’S standards. Repercussions can lead to jail time or fines because AHIMA
sets standards to comply with HIPPA regulations. If you in violation with their standards, they
can revoke your credentials which in turn can lead to loss of employment or future job
opportunities. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) ethics are not regulated
by any government standards. Violations that occur for these standards will unlikely not lead to
jail time or fines if reported. Although, credentials can be revoked if a violation occurs. The
AAPC is an organization that promotes the integrity and professionalism aspect of coding. While
