Declaration of Independence Declaration of Independence  Committee formed under Thomas Jefferson to draft a declaration of  independence  During writing of declaration, Jefferson attempted to address the problem of  slavery  o He couldn’t reconcile it so he asked Benjamin Franklin what to do o Franklin told him to just declare independence and worry about slavery  after o Jefferson cut out 80% of the first draft (the giant chunk dealing with  slavery) Beginning is a beautiful piece of writing Body is a list of crimes the British committed against us Declaration is like a birth certificate for the United States  July 4, 1776  The declaration was a roll of the dice at the time  o No guarantee of success  o “If we fail, we will all hang from the same tree” – Ben Franklin  Fairly certain that the American pop was evenly divided
