Literacy Analysis MemoTo: Kollen HomothFrom: Kari CannonDate: November 23, 2019Subject: Literacy Case StudyThe student I observed and assessed throughout this semester was G. G is six years old and is infirst grade at Fulton Elementary School. He is a very eager learner and active participant in Mrs.Fox’s class. He has many interests, such as playing sports (especially football), playing with hisdog and his sister, and playing video games. He enjoys reading funny books, adventure books, orbooks about animals, particularly books with facts about dogs and beagles like his own dog. When it came to doing some literacy assessments with G, it was evident he was on track for firstgrade. G seemed confident and comfortable each time we met and was always willing and readyto share his thoughts and feelings with me. We began with the Reading Attitude Survey where Ifound that G thoroughly enjoys books and reading but prefers it on his own terms, and prefersplaying over reading. My next assessment on G was a primary spelling inventory, which is usedin kindergarten through third grade. He correctly spelled eleven of the 24 words given to him.His biggest struggle with this was the vowel patterns and inflected endings in words.I then administered some “Word Lists” to G where he was asked to begin reading words at a Pre-Primer level up to second grade and to read as many as he could until he seemed frustrated. Gmade it through three and a half different word lists at the independent level, determining that thefourth list of words, the first grade list, was his instructional level. We tried to see how manywords he could get in the second grade list set but he became frustrated after about 4 words, confirming that the second grade level was perfect for his instructional value. Based on myfindings from the word lists, I further assessed G through both a “QRI Narrative” piece and a“QRI Expository” piece that were both in his level. G’s fluency and comprehension during bothof these were almost perfect, but he seemed less sure of himself throughout these assessmentscompared to the others. To foster further development with G, I would like to focus mainly on spelling and readingwords with long and short vowel patterns or vowel teams, inflected endings, and blends. This isG’s biggest struggle when it comes to literacy and knowing how to sound out or spell words withtricky vowel patterns or inflected endings. Reading, spelling, and dealing with words like theseare the only time I’ve seen G somewhat struggle, stutter, pause, and/or seem not as sure ofhimself. When it comes to reading comprehension and reading accuracy, G is proficient at gradelevel and moving towards becoming more independent.
Analysis of all AssessmentsReading Attitude Survey AnalysisFor the Reading Attitude Survey, I interviewed G and he is in the first grade.Hishomeroom teacher recommended him to be my case study student because she believed that he
