SC121 Unit 4 Assignment PART 1 1. Why are cells are important to the body Cells are building blocks. They compose everything inside of your body. Cells make tissues, tissues make organs, etc. Without cells, you would not be anything. Each cell in your body has a specialized function within the body. Cells provide structure within the body and use nutrients from what you eat to carry out their specialized functions. 2. Which organelle do you think would kill you the fastest if you lost it? Explain your answer. The organelle that would kill you fastest if you did not have it is the mitochondria. Mitochondria are responsible for energy production. Your body needs energy for everything! Your cells would be unable to function correctly if you had no mitochondria, because you would have nothing to convert nutrients into energy for cellular use. Mitochondria are the batteries of the body. They provide the energy for your body to function. 3. How is cell shape related to function? Give at least 3 examples and explain. The shape of a cell directly relates to its function because if its shape doesn't fit its duties, the actions of that cell wouldn't be carried out properly. For example, a neuron has long fibers that extend off of it, called axons and dendrites. These axons and dendrites assist the cell in passing along the information it is processing. Without these dendrites, the information would be sent slower or maybe not at all. This would stop your bodies natural reactions. Another example would be RBCs and their sleek rounded shape. This shape assists the cells in flowing through capillaries without getting hung up. Your capillaries are rounded, so it makes senses that your red blood cells are as well. My last example is cilia,
