July 30, 2019ENG-105Virgil MathesReview of WebMD on ADHDWhen a website provides a descriptive article regarding diseases and disorders such as ADHD, it should at minimum meet specific criteria regarding accuracy, currency and objectivity.Accuracy is confirming that the information is correct; currency is confirming that the information is current and objectivity is identifying if there is any bias in the article. According to Buchsel (2001) a descriptive article will discuss a specific topic, disease, treatment, medication or even a new procedure. Web MD effectively uses the accepted criteria of accuracy, currency and objectivity to provide the general population with valuable information regarding the symptoms, potential causes, treatments and medications for ADHD. Accuracy is confirming that the information is correct by fact checking, being able to identify who the author is and what their credentials are as well as identifying potentially contact them. WebMD’s webpage on ADHD successfully proves its accuracy to the reader by providing its sources at the bottom of the article, as well as links to additional articles regarding ADHD thathave their own cited sources. WebMD (2019) states that ADHD is the most commonly identified mental disorder of children. Buica, Irimie-Ana, Ionescu, Rad & Dobrescu (2019) also make mention of how common ADHD is with children and makes very similar commentary regarding
