HEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS 2 HEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS Introduction Policy analysis is described as a process of evaluating how a policy achieves a set of goals in relations to policy and its’ goals. Policy analysis involves the use of two main components. The first component involves the analysis of the existing policy through a process of descriptive and analytical by trying to explain the policy and its development. The second component is the identification and definition of the problem in relations to health policy. Health professional have shown that it is critical to clearly define a problem when responding to a major health care concern in the community (Dixit & Sambasivan, 2018). These include the policy issues that provides guidelines on how to achieve specific goals about public health care. Identification and definition of the problem is the first in policy analysis and the use of the first experience is critical especially when the experience is relevant to the health issue. This paper analyzed suicide prevention policy in Australian public health care. Suicide can be described as act of willingly taking your own life due to several factors including medical conditions, economic status, and historical injustice among others. Several studies have been conducted to determine the reasons behind the high cases of suicides in Australia. Statistics indicated that the high cases of suicides reported in Australian involves the indigenous communities, which are Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal community (Australian Government, 2013). The findings indicated that the indigenous population are at higher risks of committing suicide as compared to non-indigenous population. Since 1990s, suicide has been the leading cause of death among male under the age of 44 years and women under the age of 34 years in Australia. These high cases of suicides of young population in Australia has negative effects on the economy and it increases the health cost.

HEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS 3 In response to this Australian government formulated preventive policies with objective of reducing and subsequently eliminating cases of suicides among the indigenous communities. As stated earlier, policy analysis in health care is used to evaluate the successes of health care policy. It is important to understand that health care policies are established to alleviate a health care issues affecting a selected population (Dixit & Sambasivan, 2018). Although policy formulation approach is standardized across the world, the implementation process differs from one country to another. Analysis indicated that suicide prevention policies in Australia were formulated by first identifying the root cause of the problem. One of the main cause of suicide in Australia is associated with mental health. Studies have shown that indigenous communities in Australia are the most burden by mental health problems. Statistics indicated that 6.9 lives are lost daily in Australia due to mental health problem. The annuals death associated with mental
