The main characters are the elder sisterSourdi and the younger sister Nea that are very close to each other. This story, like any otherfictional one, has specific elements that make it a good story. Without these elements, it justwould not be a good story or a story at all. Between these essential elements of literary in"Saving Sourdi," we can find plot and setting. The plot in the story tells us what is happening andalso includes the elements of conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Thesetting enhances the story by folding the plot into a place and time that fits perfectly with what isgoing on; in fact, it is often the setting that makes the action in the story possible. In "SavingSourdi," May-Lee Chai uses settings to distort the reality of the plot and eventually exposing thatan obsession is able to trick someone’s perception.This story by May-Lee Chai makes powerful the use of settings to reveal the maincharacter, Nea's feeling throughout the story. One basic setting in this story is the cornfield.During the fall, Duke drives Sourdi and Nea to the cornfield right after school where there wasno one else there to confess he likes her. Duke and Sourdi have their first kiss at the cornfieldwhere the cornstalks emerged "We hiked through a ditch to the edge of an empty cornfield longsince harvested, the stubble of cornstalks pocking up from the black soil, pale and bonelike"(Chai 86). When Nea see Duke kisses her sister, she is so surprised and tries to look at another

These sentences expose theunwillingness of Nea to let her sister endure her relationship. She even cannot see her sister ishaving the best moment with someone else even though he is someone she loves. She thinks thatthe presence of Duke in Sourdi's life will endanger her relationship with her older sister andwould separate them. She seems so sad because she wants to be with her sister forever, only thetwo of them. This setting signifies the sadness that Nea feels when she sees someone is trying totake her sister away from her, from her life. Since the beginning of the story, we can tell how
