The Blue Planet: Review for Exam 1 Science and the Scientific Method : o Hypothesis : an unproved explanation for the way things happen. o Theory : a generalization about nature, a hypothesis that has withstood numerous tests making scientists certain that it is truth. Systems : o Characteristics : Structure/organization Function in some way Transfer material/energy between components Contain functional and structural relationships Function requires driving force energy o 3 Types of systems : Open : Can exchange both energy and matter across its boundary. Closed : The boundary permits the exchange of energy, but not matter, with its surroundings. Isolated : The boundary prevents the system from exchanging either matter or energy with its surroundings. Feedback Loops : o Positive : amplifies change o Negative : diminishes change (doesn’t eliminate it) o Systems diagrams : Keep track of components , linkages or couplings between components. o Couplings : one way streets. Two kinds: Positive : X X; Change in first component causes change in same direction in second. Ex: A B; An increase in A leads to an increase in B; or A decrease in A leads to a decrease in B. Negative : X –o X Change in first component causes an opposite change in the second component. Ex: A –o B; An increase in A leads to a decrease in B; or a decrease in A leads to an increase in B. o Types of Feedback Loops : Positive Feedback Loop A B A B Negative Feedback Loop A B A o- B Positive Feedback Loop
