CS Chapter Nine Define: o Ethics : How one ought to teach and what constitutes a good teacher, as well as values such as power, fairness, honesty, trustworthiness, and knowledge. o Classroom Management : Actions that create, implement, and maintain a classroom climate that supports learning. o Productive Conflict : Conflict that enhances the interpersonal relationship to the extent that such is needed to continue working together. o Teacher Influence vs . Mutual Influence : The teacher influences the students, students influence the teacher, and the students influence one another. o Challenge Behavior : occurs when students behave contrary to implicit or explicit classroom expectations. Such behaviors can be motivated by a lack of classroom understanding, or the “cultural” expectations of the class. What role does the teacher play in the social influence of the classroom, and how? o Teachers must facilitate academic growth while creating an environment conductive to learning. That is, we must establish and maintain positive teacher-student relationships if we hope to have a positive influence on learning. Because the classroom is a place of social influence, it is important to consider the ethical responsibilities that accompany such a dynamic. What are some ethical considerations for teachers, and what are the standards/criteria that could guide their decision making? o 1) Audience analysis: Consider the ethical position of the group to which the standards will apply. o 2) Political System: of the group as the basis for ethical reasoning o 3) Human Nature: should be respected when making ethical decisions. o 4) Dialogical Perspective: suggests that one should listen to all sides of an issue while remaining committed to one ethical decision. o 5) Situational Perspective: promotes the idea that rules cannot be applied to ethical decisions because the situational element will determine one’s standards. o 6) Legal Perspective o 7) Personal Code: of ethics that can be applied after systematically reflecting on various approaches. What are some suggestions for handling minor misbehavior problems? o 1) Eye Contact o 2) Touch and Gesture o 3) Physical Closeness o 4) Asking for responses What are some suggestions for handling disruptive students?
