Caitlyn Adams Lab #17 October 10, 2019 Introduction to Organic Chemistry Part 1: Objective: The objective of this experiment is to determine how acid and base affect a solution consisting of water and methyl violet indicator. Hypothesis: It is expected that when the acid is added, the solution will be a yellow color since the pH will be lower than 1.6. When the base is added the solution will be a violet color because the pH is above 1.6. Additionally, in the magnesium hydroxide solution, the metal will dissolve in an acidic solution and not in a basic solution, because when the acid is added it can react with the hydroxide ions and from water allowing the reaction to proceed in the forward direction, but when base is added it will return to the original equilibrium. Variables: Independent – addition of acids and bases Dependent – the way the reaction shifts Experimental Procedure: 1) Add 5 mL of water to a clean test tube. 2) Add 3 drops of methyl violet indicator and record the colour of the original solution.
