Foreigners in Their Own Land: -What is the claim we have to have to be members of our society. -Not here to threaten, were here to participate. -first spoken language was not English, It was Spanish. -people had left their countries thinking the US was paradise, it provided jobs. Many heartbroken having to leave family to work. -we need to be proud of who we are. -Spanish people dominated the world for more than 3 centuries. -San Francisco, Santa Cruz, were all mission towns. Missionaries (religious community, inter price where Indians bought to work into the fields, priests relied on women, women supervised everything, Indians who didn’t do their job were punished). In California there’s buildings dedicated to these missionaries. -Mexico challenged Catholic Church, -Lands divided into Rancho’s. Indians worked on ranchos. Padres made sure mission lands stayed with people they trusted. -Texas use to be Mexico. Americans wanted to grow cotton plants into Texas but they knew they had to deal with Mexican laws and authority to develop Texas. Imagined it being slave holding society. -Tejanos identifier themselves into something other than Mexican. Wanted strong local government. Santana was marching into what was still Mexico. 189 men died.
