Hobbes All men are very equal in the end no matter how many differences seem to be present 3 causes of quarrel Competition Diffidence Glory o Men are constantly at a time of war, because of motivations, with others or with themselves because of why people act Act: Self-love Altruism Self-love by reason o Human nature is what causes most of the problems with men Laws of nature: justice, equity, modesty, mercy, Golden Rules Men always in competition for honor and dignity Only way to let everyone live contently is to put everyone’s wills and desires into one man: COMMONWEALTH (monarchy) Law of nature wants an indifferent judge of authority Men have to powers: o Do what is appropriate to preserve oneself o Punish the crimes committed against the law HUMANS ARE EVIL In isolation, we are very good working, but in a group, there is difficulty HUMANS ARE BASICALLY EQUAL Once laws disappear, basic human nature appears and we take what we want If left to strive for one’s self:

That is his perception of basic human nature o Once you start down the path of war and misery, you can never go back Rousseau Wants everyone to get along with everyone Society corrupts us Government destroys human nature After disasters (9-11), human nature is that everyone wants to get along and draw together People act of the best interest of others and not themselves – Altruism or regard for others Everyone lives in a state of peace where everyone takes care of their own needs and doesn’t bother anyone else Locke Self-love with reason Basic human nature is not good, similar to original sin PEOPLE ACT OUT OF SELF-LOVE WITH REASON We help ourselves out by helping others out State of nature is that of peace and working with each other and use their reason o However, reason doesn’t always work and there sometimes is a state of war in the community No such community exists, there is always a little corruption in the community
