Carmen Gilmore CathedralJanuary 27, 2020Raymond Carver's “Cathedral”Discussion Questions1)Is the narrator a sympathetic protagonist? Does our opinion of him change as the story progresses? Does the narrator develop or change or "grow" over the course of the evening? The narrator is in fact a sympathetic protagonist because we sympathize withhis ignorance and how he overcame it at the end. Our opinion changes about him over the course of the story as his actions and behaviors changes with the blind man. The narrator changes by becoming more open minded to learning about this blind man and his way of doing this. He sees that all his assumptions and prior stereotypes of blind people were wrong.2)What are the primary emotions displayed by the narrator throughout, and how can we understand them in terms of the life he leads? What are some adjectives you would use to characterize him? What role does alcohol play in his life? The primary emotions displayed by the narrator throughout the story were envy and confusion. We understand this by seeing how he seems frustrated when his wife laughs with the blind man constantly. We also see this with his ignorance toward blind people in general and how he does not understand what his wife sees in the blind man. Adjectives to characterize him would be aggressive, rude, sexist, and ignorant. Alcohol seems to play major role in his life because he had multiple drinks throughout the day and that night.3)What is the narrator’s attitude toward his wife? Describe the narrator’s marriage. What kind of marriage do they have, and what evidence do you find to support your conclusion? Is the narrator’s jealousy of Robert irrational? The narrator’s attitude toward his wife seems to be somehow loving. He seems like he is not happy with their marriage, but he does in fact love her. Their marriage seems empty, because him and his wife don’t seem to be able to properly communicate. The wife was sending the blind man tapes for him to listen to because she knew he wanted to listen to her. The narrators

What does Robert do to put the narrator at ease?
