Introduction The accuracy of a measurement refers to how close one’s results are to the true value. Precision, however, refers to how close two or more measurements are to one another.Significant figures are important because they reveal how accurate one’s measurementsare (the more significant figures, the more accurate). In chemistry, one should always allow the last digit to be an estimate. This is necessary since it prevents rounding of numbers, and allows one to replicate the experiment with less deviation.Dilution is the process of reducing the concentration of a solute by mixing it with more solvent (during this lab, the solvent was water). It is also worth mentioning that solvents and solutes work inversely: the more diluted a solvent is, the less concentrated the solute is, and vice versa. Density is an intensive property. This means that it does not depend upon the amount of a substance. It also refers to how compact a substance is. For instance, while ice and water are made of the same substance (H2O), ice is more dense (or solid). The equation to find an object’s density is D=M/V (density=mass divided by volume).The goal of this particular experiment was to find the mass of water within different measuring instruments. Additionally, we had to find the mass of sand, find how much a drop of water weighed, find the volume, and how many drops of water were in a container. We also worked with diluted substances in this lab.Procedures:Part 1: For this investigation, pieces of glassware that are used to measure out the water are a 50ml beaker, a 10ml graduated cylinder, a 50ml buret, and a 10ml graduated pipet. We first measured and recorded the mass of all the glassware on an electronic balance. We measure out 20 mL of distilled water for the beaker, 5ml for the graduated cylinder, 20 mL for the buret, and 5ml for the graduated pipet. Once the water was measured in the glassware, we measured
and recorded the mass of all the glassware with their appropriate amount of water. We then subtracted the new mass from the old mass to find the mass of water in the glassware. Using the given density and calculated mass if the water, we then calculated the glassware volume.
