Chuong 1Jocelyn ChuongProf. SunshineHIST G17012 Dec 2018Abraham Lincoln The “Great” Emancipator?Several of individuals believe and sought Abraham Lincoln to be a good president as wellas “The Great Emancipator.” However, many are not aware of Lincoln’s actual motive as to why he freed slaves. The entirety of whether or not Lincoln deserved the title went up for multiple debates. When Lincoln won the election, he demanded that it was his responsibility to unite the nation. In spite of that, Lincoln ran into problems in which to save the Union, he was compelled to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. This comes to show that Lincoln did whatever it took to restore the Union. Abraham Lincoln does not deserve the accolade “The Great Emancipator.”Abraham Lincoln did not attempt to abolish slavery but rather, he was much more focused on preserving the Union. During the Civil War of 1861, a little bit after Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th president, he used the war as a tactic to save the Union. He insisted that itwas his constitutional duty to stabilize the nation, rather than abolishing slavery. Lincoln worked cautiously and avoided issuing any immediate anti-slavery proclamation.
