Week 21. . . . What is the essence or beginning of everything (according to the three Milesians cosmologists, Thales, Anaximenes and Anaximandro)? And how would you answer that question? (My lecture and the video "The Backbone of Night" is essential for answering this question), Thales believed that the primal element of the universe was water; Ananimenes believed that it was air, and Herculitis thought it was fire (pg. 49). In the Backbone of the Night, Carl Sagan mentions fire and how it keeps us warm and lights our way, helps us see, and keeps animals away, after reading and hearing that theory, I would agree with Herculitis. 3.
