The US Preventative Services Task Force advises primary clinicians to screen adolescents for depression provided there is a system to confirm diagnosis and initiate treatment. One main difference between the adult and the youth DSM-IV criteria for major depressive disorder is that youth may meet the diagnostic criteria by presenting with irritability rather than depressed mood. (Richardson, 2010.) Advantages of the PHQ-9 include that it is shorter than other depression screenings, can be administered in person by a clinician, by telephone, or self-administered.
