LUPE’S CASE STUDY Introduction Stress, as well as coping methods, change across a lifespan and requires a multidisciplinary perspective to understand the change. Moreover, stress and coping methods are affected by the social view and validate individual differences in changes and life paths. Haase et al. (2013); states how stress changes across the lifespan mainly depend on the characterization of stress. Life events stress may reflect the life stage of an individual as well as social life, while traumatic stress reflects the social, historical perspective. This paper addresses the questions regarding a case study about Lupe. These questions include talking about developing stresses and contextual stresses in Lupe’s current life, and the possible issues that might arise with Lucia’s return, and Lupe’s sources of personal strength. 2
LUPE’S CASE STUDY In Lupe’s life, various types of stress including developmental stresses that are correlated to age, along with the contextual stresses. According to Li (2013), developmental stress has clear behavioral indicators and involves an awareness that is fixed in the present day. With Lupe’s case, there is developmental stress presenting due to her husband leaving her with the children because he found family life to be too hard and overwhelming. This seems to have affected Lupe socially as she had no one to share her life with. A healthy social environment can keep individuals emotionally engaged after a stressful personal event. Lupe’s has been single for 16 years, and she feels that it is time to meet someone new in order to share her life. In this case, the social engagement system (SES) would allow Lupe to obtain support from her dearest friends; this can lead to the reduction of stress-related hormones. Keeping in mind that Lupe is the primary breadwinner for her family she is likely to be preoccupied with the difficulties of raising her children, household maintenance, finances, and caring for her elderly mother. Lupe is distressed, and she feels that she has a limited amount of time to pursue some of her interests and desires. According to Li (2013), this type of pressure reduces the ability of a person to perform tasks and can also result in mental exhaustion and weakness. Lupe’s life events can also be the primary source of her distress
