Topic, RQ, and Literature Review ● Designing a Research Project: Components ● Select your topic ○ To have a sense of what you’re interested in: read ■ Watch tv, discussions ■ Stimulate ideas and find a topic ○ Arouses interest, deep connection ○ Start where you are ■ Advantage: knowledge about it, good starting point, keep you motivated, connections (you need an “in” for qualitative) ■ Disadvantage: biased, resist certain answers ● Is it empirical? ○ Empirically observable: we can use our senses, indirectly or directly to measure something about the social world ● Is it sociological? ○ Groups ○ Who a person is, what they think and do is impacted by the people they are with ○ Shape yourself, social outcome, worldviews ○ Patterned- social patterns, group processes and dynamics, what groups hold in terms of a view ○ Generalizes beyond one instance ○ While looking for patterns, there are inconsistencies ■ don’t entirely dismiss these ○ Is it sociologically IMPORTANT ● Is it a question?
