Introduction to Research-Based Knowledge First hand knowledge Knowledge you gain through directly experience or observe Burning your hand Drink too much, start to puke Advantage: you know it to be true because you experienced it (you trust yourself) Disadvantage: It’s not reliable, can draw false (erroneous) conclusions Second hand knowledge Someone told you and you agreed (knowledge by agreement) Two common sources: Tradition: inherited, passed on cultural Ex: childbirthing Advantage- based on history, record of it Disadvantage- hard to change, even if it is wrong Can also hinder inquiry Authority: information from or a person or institution of authority Church leaders, Police, Parents, Government, Pop icons, Doctors Advantage: these people have the expertise, we trust these people Disadvantage: they might not have the expertise, authorities also err Research-based knowledge These should not be considered sources of knowledge, they are sources of belief
