Executive SummaryMajority of the contents and assignments in this course helped me to better understand fostering a culture of organizational learning and applying systems thinking to enhance organizational performance. However, the ones that had the most impact were: project portfolio on systems analysis, articles and concept about “Theory of Constraints and bottlenecks”, “The Goal” by Goldratt and Cox and “Thinking in systems: A primer” by Meadows. The project portfolio on systems analysis had the most significant impact because it involved case studies and creating various systems diagrams. The case studies on Opportunity Consultant, Inc., Bayonne Packaging, Inc. and Baria Planning Solutions, Inc. helped me to analyze and diagnose business management issues with different situations and challenges. Manually drawing out systems diagrams such as the tree and causal loop diagrams for each case facilitated the utilization of systems thinking. Learning through these case studies and using systems diagrams, I learned how to identify problems and root causes through systems thinking. The articles “What’s Constraining Your Innovation?” (Dalton, 2009) and “The Bottleneck Conundrum” (King, 2011) were also beneficial and insightful learning materials. The two article discusses the concept of theory of constraints, identifying bottlenecks and methods for handling them by applying a system’s thinking approach. The books, “The Goal” (Goldratt & Cox, 2014) and “Thinking in Systems: A primer” (Meadows, 2008) were influential learning materials for solidifying my understanding of TOC and systems thinking analysis. “The Goal” (Goldratt & Cox, 2014) took a unique approach by explaining these concepts in a story about a character’s problems with business management. “Thinking in Systems: A primer” (Meadows, 2008) provided several different examples and explanation on all types of systems diagrams. 2
The impact that these assignments will have on the value that I will bring into my role in future organizations will be creating an environment that enhances systems thinking. Fostering an organizational culture that uses unique thinking process approach to issues will stimulate innovative ideas and solutions. Organizations grow and perform from the mind of its members
